What is Zinc?
Zinc is an essential trace mineral that the body cannot store in any large quantity, so a small amount has to come from food every day. It works as a structural or catalytic component in hundreds of enzymes, which is why it appears in discussions of immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, taste, and the condition of skin, hair and nails.
What zinc does in the body
Zinc has several established roles recognised by nutrition authorities:
- Contributes to the normal function of the immune system
- Contributes to normal DNA synthesis and to normal cell division
- Contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails
- Contributes to normal protein synthesis and normal macronutrient metabolism
- Contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress
- Contributes to normal cognitive function and to normal fertility and reproduction
These are descriptions of normal physiology. They describe what the nutrient participates in, not an effect a supplement produces on top of an adequate diet.
Why daily intake matters
Unlike iron, the body keeps no dedicated zinc store it can draw on when intake drops. Circulating zinc is small relative to what is bound up in muscle and bone, and those pools are not easily released. Intake therefore has to be reasonably steady rather than occasional.
How much
Recommended intakes published by the US Office of Dietary Supplements are 11 mg a day for adult men and 8 mg for adult women, rising during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The tolerable upper intake level for adults is 40 mg a day from all sources combined. Higher amounts taken over long periods can interfere with copper absorption, which is why long-term high-dose use is not a self-managed decision.
Where it comes from
Oysters are by a wide margin the densest source. Red meat and poultry supply most zinc in a typical mixed diet, with crab, shrimp, beans, chickpeas, nuts, pumpkin seeds, whole grains, dairy and eggs contributing the rest. Zinc from plant sources is absorbed less efficiently because phytate, present in legumes and whole grains, binds it — one reason recommended intakes are set higher for people eating mostly plant-based diets. Soaking, sprouting and fermenting reduce phytate.
Who tends to fall short
Vegetarian and vegan diets, older adults, people with digestive conditions that affect absorption, and pregnancy and breastfeeding are the situations most often discussed. Signs of low zinc status are non-specific — appetite changes, altered taste, slower wound healing — and none of them confirms anything on its own. A qualified healthcare provider can assess the picture properly.
Choosing and taking a supplement
Labels list either elemental zinc or the total compound weight; the elemental figure is the one to compare. Common forms include zinc gluconate, citrate, picolinate and bisglycinate. Zinc on an empty stomach causes nausea in some people, so it is usually taken with a meal, and it is generally spaced apart from high-dose iron or calcium and from certain antibiotics, which can affect absorption in either direction.
Zinc is a small daily requirement rather than something to load up on. Food first, a supplement to close a gap, and the label amount as the ceiling. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking prescription medication, check with a qualified healthcare professional first.
