Frequent Forgetfulness? B-Complex Vitamins Can Help
Occasional forgetfulness happens at every age, and its most common causes are ordinary ones: short sleep, stress, alcohol, certain medications, and aging itself. B vitamins enter the conversation for a specific reason — they are water-soluble, the body stores little of them, and they have established roles in normal energy metabolism and normal functioning of the nervous system, so intake needs to be regular.
Everyday reasons memory can feel patchy
- insufficient or poor-quality sleep
- stress, worry, or a period of low mood
- alcohol intake
- some medicines, including certain sleep aids, antihistamines, and sedatives
- getting older, which affects processing speed more than memory itself
- a diet low in B vitamins
None of this is a diagnostic list. Memory changes that are persistent, worsening, or interfering with daily tasks should be assessed by a qualified medical professional rather than self-managed.
Why B vitamins are grouped together
There are eight B vitamins. They are chemically distinct but share two practical features: they dissolve in water, and the body holds only limited reserves, so a steady daily supply matters. A B-complex product contains at least three of them, and many contain all eight.

- B2, riboflavin: normal energy-yielding metabolism and protection of cells from oxidative stress.
- B3, niacin: normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function.

- B6, pyridoxine: normal red blood cell formation, normal homocysteine metabolism, and normal psychological function.
- B7, biotin: normal macronutrient metabolism, maintenance of normal hair and skin, and normal functioning of the nervous system.
- B9, folate: normal blood formation, maternal tissue growth during pregnancy, and reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
- B12, cobalamin: normal red blood cell formation, normal functioning of the nervous system, and normal psychological function.
What the research literature shows
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Nutrition Reviews in 2022 pooled 95 studies covering 46,175 participants to examine B vitamin intake alongside measures of memory and thinking in adults. The authors reported that supplementation was associated with slower change in cognitive test scores, with the association clearest where intake began earlier and continued longer. Higher dietary folate intake was also associated with better measured outcomes in older adults.
These are pooled associations drawn largely from observational and mixed study designs, so they indicate a relationship rather than proving cause and effect. What the authors did conclude firmly is that attention to adequate B vitamin status in older populations is worthwhile — a point about nutritional adequacy.
Where to get them
B vitamins are widely distributed in food: whole grains, pork, legumes, nuts and seeds, leafy greens, eggs, dairy, and fish. Vitamin B12 occurs almost exclusively in animal-source foods, which is why people on vegetarian or vegan diets are advised to watch their intake.
Practical notes on supplements
B-complex products are usually taken once daily with food. Because these vitamins are water-soluble, surplus amounts are largely excreted — bright yellow urine after a dose is riboflavin passing through and is not a concern. Stay within the amounts stated on the label, and if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking prescribed medication, speak with a qualified healthcare professional first.
The useful framing is unremarkable: cover the basics with food, keep sleep and stress in reasonable shape, and treat a B-complex as a way of maintaining adequate daily intake.
