Tiny Fish Oil Capsules for All Generations

Capsule size reflects how concentrated the oil is, not its quality: at 60 to 85 percent EPA plus DHA, a much smaller capsule carries the same omega-3 as a standard 30 percent oil.

Small fish oil capsules exist because capsule size is a formulation outcome, not a quality signal. When an oil is concentrated so a higher percentage of it is EPA and DHA, the same amount of omega-3 fits into less oil and the capsule can be smaller. That matters for children, older adults, and anyone who finds large softgels hard to swallow, because a supplement only does anything if it is actually taken consistently.

Why capsule size varies

Softgel size is driven by the concentration of the oil inside. Standard fish body oil is typically around 30 percent EPA plus DHA, so a 1,000 mg capsule delivers roughly 300 mg of omega-3. Concentrated oils reach 60 to 85 percent, so a much smaller capsule carries the same omega-3 content.

What rTG means

Natural fish oil is a triglyceride: three fatty acids attached to a glycerol backbone. To concentrate it, manufacturers split the fatty acids off the glycerol and convert them to ethyl esters (EE), which can be separated by boiling point. Some products are sold in that form. In rTG (re-esterified triglyceride) products, a further enzymatic step reattaches the concentrated fatty acids to glycerol, returning the oil to a triglyceride structure. rTG omega-3 has been reported in absorption studies to be absorbed more efficiently than the ethyl ester form. The extra step is why rTG oils cost more to produce.

EPA, DHA, and DPA

  • EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is a precursor for signaling molecules in the body's normal regulatory processes and contributes to maintaining normal heart function.
  • DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is a major structural fatty acid in the brain's grey matter and the retina, and contributes to maintaining normal brain function and normal vision.
  • DPA (docosapentaenoic acid) sits between the two in the metabolic pathway and occurs naturally in fish oil in smaller amounts.

Fishy aftertaste and reflux

The characteristic fishy smell and aftertaste come mainly from oxidation breakdown products, not from omega-3 itself; fresh, low-oxidation oil has very little odor. Steps that reduce reflux include taking capsules with a meal rather than on an empty stomach and storing the bottle away from heat and light.

Purity and who tends to use it

Long-lived fish accumulate contaminants, so concentrated oils are refined to reduce heavy metals such as mercury along with dioxins and PCBs, and finished products are typically tested against published purity limits. Long-chain omega-3s come mainly from oily fish, so people whose diets include little salmon, mackerel, sardines, or anchovies get correspondingly less. These fatty acids have been studied in large cardiovascular outcome trials since the 1990s, with mixed results across that research; a food supplement is not a treatment for any heart or vascular condition.

Ease of use is a legitimate reason to prefer one format over another. Anyone on blood-thinning medication or scheduled for surgery should discuss omega-3 supplements with their doctor first.
