Tiny Microorganisms, Big Function for Gut and Skin

Postbiotics are compounds produced by microbial fermentation and contain no live cells, so they do not depend on surviving stomach acid. EpiCor is a dried Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentate in this category.

Gut function and skin are linked through everyday processes: how food is broken down and absorbed, how regularly waste is cleared, and how the immune tissue lining the intestine behaves. Postbiotics are one part of that conversation, and a human trial of the postbiotic EpiCor(R) measured shifts in circulating immune cell populations within two hours of a single dose.

Probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics: three different things

  • Probiotics are live microorganisms that transit or colonize the gut, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains.
  • Prebiotics are fibers the body cannot digest but resident microbes can ferment, including inulin, FOS, and GOS. They are the substrate, not the organism.
  • Postbiotics are the compounds that come out of microbial fermentation: short-chain fatty acids, peptides, cell wall fragments, and other metabolites. Because they contain no live cells, they do not need to survive stomach acid to reach the intestine, and they are more stable in storage.

EpiCor(R) is a dried fermentate produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, so it belongs to this third category rather than being a live probiotic.

What the human study measured

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, participants took a single dose and had blood drawn over the following hours. Compared with placebo, researchers reported measurable changes in immune cell populations in circulation, including CD3+ T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, at around two hours. The authors described these as markers of immune cell activity and trafficking. The study measured blood markers, not skin appearance.

Why gut function comes up in skin conversations

Several nutrients that skin tissue draws on are absorbed in the small intestine, including vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and the fat-soluble vitamins. Absorption depends on an intact intestinal lining, adequate bile and enzyme activity, and normal transit time — all influenced by fiber intake, hydration, and regular meals. People sometimes report that periods of irregular digestion coincide with changes in how their skin feels.
